This unusual house is located in Japan. It is designed by kikuma Watanabe + d environmental design system laboratory. The design includes and applies sundial to operate its complete passive system. The interior space supports a comfortable living environment, which is naturally cool in summer and warm in winter. This ecological technology assists passive systems in using the sun and wind as effective means of air conditioning.
Looking up at sundial from studio, set a wooden beam every 7.5 ° (half an hour)

The built-in sundial can judge time by the change of light and shadow. The construction process has three stages:
1. Design the prototype of sundial
The windows are located on the south side. The eaves can block the strong sunlight in summer and get the sunshine in winter. At the same time, thermal insulation is installed on the wall. In order to install sundial, the roof inclines to 34.6 ° of the site. Under the roof, we place a half cylinder with the same inclination angle, and a skylight is set on the center of the cylinder. We can judge the time by the position of the light.
Look at the sundial from the central spindle. The light band tells us the time (11:30) (right)
2. Adapt to the site environment
The site is irregular, with sundial facing south and multi-directional view towards the garden. The site has a gentle slope from west to East, and half of the kitchen, office and living room is 1000mm below the ground level. The main opening is to the East, facing the ponds, hills and historic sites in the area.

3. Orientation planning
The plan of passive residence is divided into two areas. The brighter areas of both include the living room and the kitchen. At the same time, another area toward the North has a restaurant, and between the two areas are small spaces along the east-west axis, such as bathrooms and toilets.
The living room is located in the bright area on the south side

"Sundial not only tells us time, but also reminds us of the existence of the universe.
Adapting to the site reminds us of the warmth of the earth.
We live in the arms of mother earth.
We live under the protection of the father.
We live in the universe.
In this house, we can feel that we live in the universe.
That's why we named the building "the house between the earth and the sky."
